ROMEO AND JULIA – WEEKLY BLOG for the 2009 Secondary School Production

Weekly blog - 14th September

Rehearsals are now well underway for the Secondary School’s exciting adaptation of one of Shakespeare’s most famous plays. This week’s main focus was the introduction of a fusion of Greek Chorus/Narrator, music and movement and accompaniment in Shakespeare’s famous Prologue.

Firstly, our Chorus sets the scene…. “Two households both alike in dignity/In fair Verona where we lay our scene” and with the help of narrator Patcharee, in Yr 12 we are introduced to the story.

Sukrit in Yr 11 is playing one of the main characters ‘Mercury’. We asked Sukrit what he thought of his character and of playing a main role, to which he responded “He is a cool guy, with cool lines, who dies saving Romeo. I am happy to be playing such a cool character

Here is what Sukrit had to say about the first proper rehearsal for the production:
“First, we were divided into two groups of choruses, one reading the script and the other singing some of the songs. Then we started the Prologue and worked on the choreography, with the help of Now in Yr 10 (who is a ballet dancer!). I enjoy being part of the chorus and working as a team as well as being a main character because I think we work well together”.

“It was a good practice and we managed to finish our first run through of the Prologue successfully. All of the students involved were enthusiastic and things are going very well” he said.

We will hear more from Sukrit next time! Look out for the next weekly blog….
