Welcome to Year 3
Year 3 is a very important transition stage for the students as they move from Key Stage 1 to Key Stage 2
They will begin to work more independently and are actively encouraged to take more responsibility for themselves as we guide the children towards greater independence.

Literacy
We follow the National Literacy Strategy which covers a wide range of texts. In the area of non- fiction the children use texts such as information books, dictionaries and encyclopedias. They will also study fictional texts such as stories with familiar settings, plays, senses poems, shape poems, myths, legends, fables and traditional stories. Work in grammar, spelling, handwriting and creative writing are all based around the reading and comprehension of these texts.
Numeracy
We follow the National Numeracy Strategy and include a variety of ways of working and solving problems. In mental maths the children concentrate on a number of areas including times tables, reading and writing whole numbers to 1000, counting on and back in 10s and 100s from any 2 or 3 digit number and many more areas. The children also study place value, scale readings, understanding the four operations, money and real life problems, making decisions and checking results, shape and space and reasoning, measures and time, number properties, fractions and handling data.

Science
In Science the children study two topics per term. These are Teeth and Healthy Eating, How plants Grow, Materials, Rocks and Soils, Light and Shadows and Magnets. Much time in science is devoted to making predictions, deciding how to test, knowing how to make careful observations and measurements, identifying patterns in results and using these to draw conclusions.
Information & Communication Technology
In ICT the children concentrate on six main areas. These are Combining Text and Graphics, Manipulating Sound, Introduction to Databases, Exploring Simulations and Email. Many of the lessons in other curriculum areas also incorporate ICT, either classroom based activities or in one of the primary labs.
Geography
In geography the children study two topics. These are ‘Weather around the World’ and ‘Our Local Area’. In ’Weather around the World’ the students will respond to and ask questions about where places are, and how this affects climates. They will make observations about patterns and undertake simple investigations using maps and other resources. In the topic ‘Our Local Area’ the students will be able to describe a range of physical and human features of their environment, use appropriate terms, identify how people can effect the environment and also change it for the better.

History
The students will study all about King Henry VIII and the Tudors. We will learn all about King Henry VIII during his Reign as the King of England and about his six wives. We will also look at the Tudor dynasty and how the rich and poor lived during the Tudor times.

Art and Design
During Art the children will be studying the topics ‘Portraits’ and ‘Investigating patterns’.
In the first term we will investigate the way in which relationships between people are portrayed in Art.
The students will investigate patterns in textiles from different times and cultures. They will use ideas from these as a starting point for developing their own designs. They will investigate stenciling and print making techniques and explore ways of combining and organizing shapes, colours and patterns to make a decorative textile place.

Design & Technology
In Design and Technology the children design and make Photograph Frames and a Sandwich Snack. In the unit Photograph Frames the students will gain an understanding of ways in which structures can be made stable, recognizing conflicting demands on the structure and design and make a personalized photo frames appropriate for a particular person.
In designing and making a sandwich snack the students will use information to select and prepare a sandwich for a purpose, have considered how well their sandwich meets the original purpose and have an understanding of healthy eating.

Physical Education
The children continue to develop their skills, knowledge and understanding through ball skills, health related fitness, athletics and football. In games activities the children will begin to use tactics suitable for attacking and defending. In the swimming pool the teaching focuses more on individual stroke development. Throughout the year the children will also begin to understand how to evaluate their own and others’ performances and suggest improvement.
